How to choose the best carpets for my Home!

Selecting new carpet for your home can be daunting. Between choosing colors, texture, style, material, etc., a lot of decisions need to be made. And carpet really is a personal choice. It can be chosen to make statements, become part of your home’s décor, or simply be selected for functionality. Either way, we recommend that, as part of the selection process, a carpet’s potential for longevity should be kept in mind.

While there are endless choices out there as far as what materials to choose from, our belief is that nylon carpets are the best choice for your money. Because of its strength and durability and the fact that it’s one of the hardest of all synthetic carpet fibers, nylon carpet has become the most popular choice among consumers.

Usually lasting far longer than carpets made from other fibers, it has a tendency to resist wear and abrasions. It is also a very resilient with excellent “yard memory,” meaning it bounces back quickly after being bent or crushed. For your money, this is the best carpet as far as keeping it clean because it is resistant to soils, stains, and moisture that can eventually lead to mold and mildew.

As mentioned above, there are other materials out there that have their advantages and disadvantages as well; Olefin, Polyester, Triexta, and Wool, to name a few. Olefin is a tighter-woven, shorter carpet that is less expensive than nylon but will not hold up as well. It is more prone to stains and soils, and does not have the same ability to “bounce back” as nylon fibers do. While there are certain disadvantages to this type of carpet, there are advantages (especially its lower cost) to putting Olefin carpet in lower-profile, less-traffic areas of your home.

When it comes to polyester carpet, it is not as inherently resilient as nylon, but can perform pretty well if it is constructed well. Choosing a medium-density nylon will ensure the best appearance retention and long-term wear.

When it comes to keeping carpets clean, there are a few essentials we encourage you to keep in mind when it comes to shopping for the best carpets. Make sure you select a high-quality pad (this is almost as essential as the carpet’s quality), an easy-to-clean material (i.e. nylon, polypropylene, and nylon frieze), color, pattern, and always consider the amount of traffic your carpet will encounter. Do your research, because a good quality carpet – even if it’s a bit more expensive – is always worth it in the end.
